CHARACTER NAME: Kat
SERIES: DmC: Devil May Cry|Kat’s Page
CANON POINT: Start of Mission 15: The Trade, before the trade-off occurs
AGE: Unknown. Approx 19/20?

APPEARANCE:
More often than not, Kat’s face is hidden in shadow due to the hood of her hoodie being pulled up. She keeps her dark hair short (the contrast in the game leaves the fact that it is either brown or black up to debate) with two longer pieces in front. She has a star tattooed in the middle of her forehead and henna covers her fingers and hands. Under her hoodie she wears what appears to be a thin tank of some sort. She dresses in shorts, the hems rolled up her thighs, and clunky black boots. On her back, she carries a poster parcel used to transport a gateway stencil; this is accented by the belt at her waist, outfitted to carry the spray can she uses to store the premixed gateway spell. Kat is slight, thin, and Vergil and Dante hold a good few inches on her in height suggesting she’s on the shorter side of the spectrum.

When she arrives in game she will have a sprained shoulder, other minor injuries to the arm attached to said shoulder, several bruises and cuts, and a split lip due to recently undergoing torture from Mundus.

PREVIOUS GAME HISTORY: N/A

PERSONALITY:
Kat is very much the representation of innocence and humanity’s redemption in DMC. She is very idealistic, holding the Order and its goal above all else, even at the cost of her life. She is sweet, kind in nature to those she feels she can trust.

Her innocence lends to naivety, which is clearly evident in how blindly she trusts and follows Vergil’s word—likely a result of him being the one to save her from the hellish nightmare she suffered nearly every night at the hands of her father. She was taken under Vergil’s wing at a young age and taught how to use her gifts in manners he saw fit. However, due to the high regard she holds him in, she fails to see how the freedom he strives for is one that places him in rule of humanity and not the freedom of her people that she herself is striving for.

Kat is humanity presented in a positive light. She rose out of darkness, out of a bad situation in life, and instead of simply moving on she stuck with the Order to obtain the same freedom for all of humanity. She gives compassion to those that may not necessarily deserve it by keeping Dante from killing Vergil in the end, despite the fact that Vergil had every intention to control humanity himself. She shows humility, never taking full credit when Dante compliments her on her skills. Through all of these traits, she helps Dante connect to emotions and to humanity, a connection that is evident by how passionate he becomes in favor of humans and Kat herself despite initially stating that he didn’t “give a shit.”

Kat is resourceful, talented, and intelligent in her own right. When the truth of Vergil’s intent to rule over humanity finally comes to light at the end of the game, Dante confronts him with the fact that none of what they had done would have been possible without a human—without Kat. He lists off her forms of dedication; from saving their lives, to enduring torture to keep Vergil’s true identity a secret; and it is clear that she had a large and in the development of her success despite the fact the player would be inclined to see her as a secondary character. She is more than a frail creature that needs protecting, as Vergil argues for the case of ruling humanity, and she had proven that fact in most every way possible.

ABILITIES:
Kat is a medium, this enables her to astroproject her spiritual being and see into Limbo. She utilized this ability most when she was younger, taking to wander Limbo in order to escape the nightmarish abuse she suffered at the hands of her demon foster father. Whether or not this astroprojection can be used in other ways is uncertain, though Kat does speak of having out of body experiences.

In addition to her natural abilities, Vergil has taught her several spells and recipes based on old Wiccan statues and rituals. She has several premixed recipes such as those to open gates to Limbo by using rifts, and to alter the state of Limbo’s orientation via use of an egg timer. It can be expected that she can utilize other spells should she find access to the ingredients necessary to mix them.

POSSESSIONS:
Standard items of clothing, a sling for her arm, the gateway parcel and stencil, and a spray can with gateway spell mix—3/4 empty.

JOURNAL ENTRY SAMPLE:
[The girl that comes on screen looks a bit worse for wear, lip split and bruising starting to form on one side of her face. She shifts, hissing in discomfort before she settles again.] A ship…That can’t be our new base—not with this many people around.

Did something with the trade off go wrong? [It had to, if she had landed here. It’s clear that thought alone was very unsettling for her.]

Vergil? Dante…? [Her voice is fearful, small and soft. She pushes herself up painfully, trying to move more than she should considering the state she was in.] I don’t even know if either of you can receive this…but if you can I’m somewhere on the portside. I don’t…I’m not sure how much farther I can move right now.

[She hates even asking for help, so she simply states her location and leave the request unstated. Knowing them, if they heard her she’d be found.] If you aren’t here as well I just hope Mundus hasn’t gotten to the two of you. I hope you’re safe…

THIRD-PERSON SAMPLE:
She mentally ran down the list of ingredients as she laid them out before her. Sea salt, pinched in a bag perfectly measured; shark oil, something harder to obtain considering the market and the over fishing—a sign this mixture was going to be harder and harder to make as time went on, they’d have to be careful of how often they used it.

“What was next?” She murmurs, recounting the first two ingredients again. Iron shavings, easy to come by but more complicated to purify completely. Desiccated squirrel semen, she allowed herself a half grin at that ingredient, remembering the reaction that came from Dante the first time she ran through what went into the compound. Wolf’s hair was the last of the major ingredients with several other miscellaneous items following after.

The recipe had a lot to it, both in ingredients and in preparation, and she often had to separate herself from others in the order just to find the piece to complete it. She made sure the ingredients were carefully laid before her, joining her in the circle she had careful constructed for her spell work. She popped open an empty spray can, running a knife carefully under the lip of the canister before it gave. That, too, joined the circle.

She took up a bowl, centering it in front of her before she slowly added in her ingredients in a very particular order. She had to be certain not to mess this up, or the gateway wouldn’t work properly. She leaned over the bowl, mixing in each new piece with care until she had a strange milk white mixture before her.

“Now to get you set and ready for travel.” She murmured softly as she carefully poured the compound into the spray can. Once she was sure everything had made it in she set the bowl off to the side and held the can up close to her face in order to seal it again. Catching a whiff of the mixture wasn’t too hard with the lack of distance and she couldn’t help but wrinkle her nose.

“Dante was right…this really doesn’t smell too good.” Oh well. A spell didn’t have to smell good to work, right?
